About
A very recognizable "milking" stool designed by Arne Hovmand Olsens in Denmark, circa 1950.
Made of high quality birch wood in a warm brown wooden color, this stool is an iconic piece of Scandinavian design. The semi-circular seat combined with the tripod legs create the unique style that gave the stool it's nickname. It is made with a nice eye for quality and finish, the smooth shapes and strong connections are signs of great craftsmanship. This is a great opportunity to add an impressive touch of midcentury design to your interior!
The stool remains in good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina.
Danish furniture designer Arne Hovmand-Olsen was born in Kirkeby Sogn in 1919. In 1938 he began a cabinetry apprenticeship with the cabinetmaker Peder Olsen Sibast at his furniture manufactory in Denmark. Interested in producing his own designs, Hovmand-Olsen enrolled in a technical school specializing in furniture design in Århus in 1941. After graduating, he established his own furniture studio, creating designs in the Scandinavian modern style. His furniture was sold only in Denmark but later found great success when it began to be exported to America.
Characteristics of his designs are the use of forms with clean lines, organic curves, and tapered legs. Like many of his Danish contemporaries, he favored the use of high-quality, beautifully grained woods like teak and rosewood.
In the 1970s, he was forced to close his studio due to illness. He passed away in 1989.
