Matching pair of Victorian Carved Oak Wing Arm Chairs

About the Item

A lovely pair of heavily carved Victorian oak wing back armchairs. These chairs have intricate carvings on the back panels, side wings and exterior sides panels all done in the style of the 17th. Circa 1850 Provenance: These were acquired from “The Wodehouse”, Wombourne, Staffordshire The Wodehouse is a Grade II listed English country house near Wombourne, Staffordshire, notable as the family seat of the Georgian landscape designer and musicologist Sir Samuel Hellier and, a century later, Colonel Thomas Bradney Shaw-Hellier, director of the Royal Military School of Music. For almost 200 years the family owned the Hellier Stradivarius. It is claimed that the Wodehouse has not been sold for over 900 years, though more than once the family has died out.

An absolutely stunning example of an early oak Wainscot chair, the carved foliate and scroll top rail above a paneled back, centered with an incised lozenge, initialed and dated ‘P D 1539’, over the board seat upon turned baluster front legs and plain rear legs united by peripheral cross stretchers. We don't know the relevance of the date seeing the chair was probably made in the later part of the 16th century. It is interesting to note that King Henry VIII was on the throne during the date on this chair. This was acquired by “The Englishman’s Antiques...
