Stunning Gothic trunk from the late 1500s. This rare size Gothic chest is incredibly old and it has an amazing patina. Thanks to the natural wear it looks exactly like you would expect and want a piece of this age to look. Mentioning that a piece of furniture dates from the 16th century does not always make an impression. However, when you realize that this Gothic chest was made in the same century when Nicolaus Copernicus, Michelangelo, Christoffel Columbus, Machiavelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Elisabeth 1st and William Shakespeare were giving shape to the history of mankind then you get a real idea of its significance and rareness. This extra wide Gothic chest comes with a heavy lid that is made out of one thick, large and striking slab of nutwood. Somewhere in time this chest was nibbled on by woodworm and this has given this piece its extra ancient and beautiful, time-worn look. We can tell that the woodworm has not been active in this piece for decades and if you would rather not take our word for it, then you can still have it gassed or deep-frozen (which is the modern day method of dealing with woodworm). Over the centuries the natural wear obviously required some of the parts of this chest to be replaced or strengthened and luckily former owners have made the effort. We salute them, because you hardly ever find antiques of this age and beauty. Thanks to the old restaurations this rare antique and talking piece stands perfectly strong and stabile and it can and will be used and ejoyed for many more years to come. It will look marvelous in an entry hall, at the footend of a bed or in any other space where it has the room to shine.
