George III Breakfront Secretaire Bookcase, England c. 1790

About the Item
Standing slightly over 9 ft. high, and featuring a particularly fine swan-neck pediment with redundant layers of egg-and-dart, dentil, & beaded moundings. The cornice in matching design, with the deeply-carved motifs extending across the breakfront profile and around the sides.
The bookcase fronted by moulded glazing bars in a geometric arrangement, taking cues from the Palladian designs of the mid-18th century. The center case framed by columns, each featuring a blind fret-work design in the Gothic-inspired Rococo.
The upper section resting within a moulded frame, recesssed atop an enclosed cabinet with Secretaire & graduated drawers in center. Flanking the Secretaire are two recessed cabinets, all framed with a deep plinth base in corresponding Palladian style.
A good example of the mixture of styles in Georgian cabinetry, with good execution and proportion combining with grand results.
