About the Item

New finds from Kominka (old traditional style house) in Ibaraki pref., Japan. There're several type of wheeled Tansu - "Kuruma Dansu" in Japanese - and the wheeled trunk, "Kuruma Nagamochi" is known as one of the oldest documented in those. Also, Nagamochi (trunk) itself was used to be the one of typical furnitures in the wedding trousseau. This "Kuruma Nagamochi" is a product of late Edo to early Meiji period (1850s - 1870s), estimate from the style & conditions. Deep, matted black color comes not only from the layers of Urushi lacquer, persimmon tannin (kakishibu) & burnt pine ink, as well as deepened by smoke from the kitchen hearth & fireplace for years. Made with traditional wood joinery without metal fastener. The structural parts are made of the thick lumbers, it's still tough enough for actual use. *** We're eco-friendly, organic-oriented vintage wood furniture & fitting seller. Avoiding the harsh chemicals as much as possible, using organic & traditional materials in the whole process, especially cleaning, repaint / refinish. - using non-toxic, eco-friendly method when cleaning & repairing the item - using organic & traditional materials (beeswax, linseed oil, urushi lacquer, persimmon tannin, burnt pine ink, etc) for repainted/re-finished items - repairing the necessary parts for long-lasting use
