19th Century Italian Renaissance Style Two Part Carved Walnut 'Stipo a Bambocci'


This palatial type of furniture originates in Genoa during the Renaissance in the 16th century. Originally a figurally carved fall front writing cabinet called a Stipo a bambocci, the bambocci being the high relief carved religious and secular figures, it was very popular with the nobility. This particular architecturally styled example is likely made in Genova early in the 19th century. In the breakfront style. Under the dentil carved corniche three drawers surmounts the central part with many small drawers centering a larger arched drawer with classical pediment. Flanking the central section architectural sections with arched and shell carved niches. The bottom part features two central doors enclosing burled panels flanked by two side doors enclosing openwork brass panels resting on sculptural carved lions paw feet.
