About the Item

One of a kind, finest quality carved, Gothic cabinet with a secret lock. This unique Gothic cabinet from the late 1800s has some of the most beautiful, hand-carved, Gothic church window panels we have ever seen. In fact, this is one of those pieces that is hard to part with, because you could not wish for a more striking antique in this Mediëval style. Both in depth and in detail, all the hand carved Gothic decoration of this cabinet is exceptional and can only be the work of a master cabinet maker. The stunning branch & leaf pattern just below the top is another Gothic element that will never go unnoticed. Apart from the finest quality carved sides and the excellent condition top (with only a few superficial scratches), there is another feature that we had never seen and that also shows the uniqueness of this piece. When we first saw this sizeable cabinet, our attention was first drawn to the beautiful carved Gothic elements, the excellent overall condition and the warm patina. It was only after we studied the quality and the details of the hand-forged, wrought iron hinges that we realized that there was no key-hole. This lack of a key hole makes the front of this cabinet perfectly symmetrical, because nothing interferes with the Gothic patterns. We were then explained how the wrought iron rosette in the middle of the top three rosettes can be pulled out slightly and turned to unlock the doors. The relatives of the former owner told us that this ingenious and costly solution was not only created for a cosmetic purpose. They were told that costly religious artefacts from a church or monastry were kept inside this striking Gothic cabinet. We cannot be sure if that was the case, but it sounds very plausible given the uniqueness, quality and richness of this late 19th century Gothic Revival cabinet.
