About the Item

This small Chinese cabinet from the early 20th century was originally used to store a scholar's collection of books and rolled-up scrolls. The chest is faced with two doors that open interior shelves and sits on a footed base that kept its contents dry and elevated. The front is cloaked in a layer of crimson-red lacquer, now beautifully aged, and painted with gilt brushwork of peonies and lotus flowers, symbols of spring and summer. The apron below is carved with decorative scrollwork, featuring a central ruyi, a symbol of longevity and fortune, and two butterflies, symbols of happiness.
