French Cabinet Napoleon III and Boulle Brass Gilt Bronze 19th Century
About the Item
Rare cabinet in Boulle marquetry style with brass threads on an ebony veneer background, curved in shape on the sides and the front, with a drawer. This piece of furniture is very original with its door treated in fruitwood and bone marquetry, with lattice motifs embedding bouquets of flowers of great refinement. The contrast of brown and black, with the bronzes, gives it a lot of charm. This piece of furniture bears two stamps from Diehl, a leading cabinetmaker, under the marble, as well as an iron mark on the back from "Jeanselme et Godin", a Parisian store which distributed cabinetmakers furniture and Napoleon III display items between 1853 and 1876. Rich ornamentation of gilded bronzes with ingot molds, high and low falls, apron, central medallion representing an offering to Bacchus on the door surrounded by large spandrels, frieze surrounding the key entry on the top drawer. Interior in rosewood Rio with a shelf, white Carrara marble top. Original key perfectly functional. DIMENSIONS: H 102cm x W 98cm x D 42cm PERIOD: Napoleon III around 1865

This style was very popular around the time of Napoleon III. The characteristic of this style is the use of small pieces of wood in furniture, inlaid designs with many different materials: precious wood, precious stones, enamel, ivory, seashells, metal, marble etc. In addition, to express the royal style, the "Boulle" style also uses a large amount of gilded copper on the furniture, such as tiger claw decoration, mirror border decoration, leaf decoration, etc. The main elementsof this cabinet is ebony and turtle shell, with decorative details and gilded legs. This is a pretty prominent highlight in the overall black and gold color scheme.
