About the Item

SATURDAY SALE Blonde polished lacquer console cabinet by James Mont (1904-1978), the father of "exotic modernism" who introduced "orientalism" into American Mid-Century Modern design. Carved inset panel with camouflage gold and silver gilt birds, lotus blossoms and flora on a trellis backlit by florescent lights flanked by bronze antiqued mirror panels. Branded "James Mont Design" inside one of the two drawers. Fitted with carved wood round handles which also function as pulls for two open cabinet spaces on either end of the cabinet base. The beauty of the multi-layered hand buffed blonde lacquer with the gilt carvings is that it will reflect and enhance whatever color scheme you have going on. Height 6 feet 11 inches, width 6 feet 10 inches, depth 22 inches.  Provenance: Zandu Inc., New York, 1956.
