19th Century Black Lacquer Cabinet with Marble Top and Mirrored Doors
Located in Richmond, London
A very rare Regency period ebonised, brass inlaid and ormolu-mounted cabinet, with mirrored doors and Calacatta viola marble top, in the manner of James Newton. English, c. 1815. An outstanding opportunity to own a piece of history that will beautifully fit in both classical and modern interiors. Why we like it One of the most elegant designs from the early 19th century, inspired by the ancient Egyptian motifs. The brass ball-feet and ormolu mounted columns are rare and unusual features, and the beautifully oxidised mirror plates and antique marble tops add to their timeless elegance. Attribution Designed in the early 19th century ‘antique’ manner, popularised by Percier and Fontaine and relate to patterns for 'Chiffoniers' and 'Drawing Room' pier tables published in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, 1808, pls. 114 and 122. Ebonised in the Egyptian taste and with the stylised palm-flowered pillars, relating to those of tripod torcheres in Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl. 22. Identical columns and ball-feet are seen on a group of pier cabinets, including a pair, sold Sotheby’s London, 29 June 2005, Lot 125, which is traditionally associated with the output of the London firm of James Newton. He labelled a suite of very similar chiffoniers sold from the collection of Maureen, Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava, Christie's, London, 25 March 1999, lots 320-321. While stylistically these cabinets relate to the pieces ascribed to James Newton, their constructional features, such as the use of cedar linings for the secretaire fittings, is relevant to the practice of another highly esteemed London firm of the Regency period, John McLean and Son. James Newton (1773-1821) Upholder and cabinet maker, trained in the celebrated workshops of Lawrence Fell and William Turton - business rivals of the great Thomas Chippendale - and, in the tradition of ambitious men, married the daughter of the latter, which in part accounts for his meteoric rise to prominence; executing commissions, inter alia, for Matthew Boulton at Soho House, the Earl of Jersey at Osterley, and Sir Gilbert Heathcote; familiar with the fashions of the Regency period, he is listed as a subscriber to Thomas Sheraton’s 1803 ‘Cabinet Dictionary’; a pair of chairs with close concordances to a design of Thomas Hope’s Household Furniture’ (plate 22), and bearing his label may be viewed at the Royal Pavilion Brighton...

Rare & Large Pollard Oak Bookcase by Holland & Sons of London
By Holland & Sons
Located in London, GB
A Substantial Pollard Oak Library Bookcase by Holland & Sons Of low breakfront form, the whole bookcase constructed using a fine pollard oak and inlaid with a variety of specimen woods, having a continuous frieze with carved Vitruvian waves, below, the four doors separated by pilasters headed by carved capitals and rosettes; the outer glazed doors enclosing shelved interiors flanking the central pair of panelled doors with fine symmetrical marquetry decoration of foliate scrolls and flowers. Supported on a moulded plinth base. The doors stamped "Holland & Sons." English, circa 1850 Founded in 1803 by Stephen Taprell and William Holland, a relation of the architect Henry Holland, Holland & Sons swiftly emerged as a preeminent furniture manufacturer during the 19th century. The firm's exceptional craftsmanship and dedication caught the attention of the Royal Family, earning them the Royal Warrant early in Queen Victoria's reign. This marked the beginning of their significant involvement in adorning and furnishing some of the most esteemed royal residences, including Osborne House, Sandringham, Balmoral, Windsor Castle, and the residences of the Prince and Princess of Wales at Marlborough House...

Constructed in a well-figured Honduras mahogany, with carved highlights; rising from cabriole leg 'ball and claw' feet, with acanthus carving at the knees, with swept and carved corner blocks; over, a running 'egg-and-dart moulding with a central leaf carved cartouche centred about a scallop shell, are two lockable glazed doors, with astragals delineating fifteen panes enclosing a shelved interior; surmounted by a pierced swan neck pediment with paterae teminals set about a turned finial, circa 1910. Thomas Chippendale the Elder (1718-1779) Yorkshire born, a highly skilled cabinet maker and designer, published in 1754 his 'Gentleman & Cabinet Maker's Director', a volume of instantly recognisable and idiosyncratic designs, that was reprinted time and again, serving as an essential manual for cabinet makers the length and breadth of England.
