Pair Baker Far East Collection Michael Taylor Natural Elmwood Colonnade Cabinets

About the Item

Wonderful vintage Asian Style chinoiserie Baker Furniture Far East Collection by Michael Taylor pair of cabinets. Comprised of natural elmwood with a matt finish and a bit of an antique Asian look, one top shelf, one lower shelf, and patinated brass hardware. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. One cabinet had some water damage with loose veneer and stains on the top, open interior deck, small drawer fronts, and feet. We have glued, filled, and restored those finishes. Bottoms of top shelves show signs of candle scorching. We have restored at best as possible. The interior of enclosed section of cabinet has a different finish, which looks pickled, than the exterior. This leads us to believe these cabinets could have been refinished at some point in their life. We love their current warm not-quite-perfect finish. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. circa 1940s-1950s. Well, yes you are seeing double!! This is an incredible pair of far east collection cabinets by Michael Taylor for Baker Furniture! They are comprised of an incredible warm and wonderful natural elmwood finish, a single shelf in the top cabinet opening, and two drawers above double doors having a single shelf inside. All featuring brass hardware and drop pulls. The single shelf behind the double doors creates adequate space for games, books, linens, or whatever you may need to stow away. This interior space is in a much lighter finish than the exterior. They would be a fabulous addition to your family room, study, or living room and although they are not lighted, it is something you could add simply if you desire. Just imagine these lovely colonnade style cabinets on either side of the fireplace or flanking the entrance to the dining room…or well…any room! They are solid, sturdy, and oh-so-full of the famed Michael Taylor style! Legendary American designer Michael Taylor was born Earnest Charles Taylor and is probably best known for creating the “California Look.” Of interior design. He was one of Architectural Digest’s “20 Greatest Designers of All Time” and "Interior Design Legends". He created several thematic collections for the prestigious Baker Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan. One of the most successful and prolific of these was "Far East"; which incorporated a subtle blending of Asian and modern design elements that suggested exotic locales and coordinated effortlessly with both traditional and contemporary furnishings. He founded his own design company, Michael Taylor Designs in 1956 where he manufactured his own designs. Taylor was noted for his rooms of airiness and light with a prominent use of natural forms and the color white. He worked continuously until his death in 1986. His furnishings are sought after today. Baker is one of the most prestigious names in furniture! They were founded in 1890 by Siebe Baker, an immigrant from the Netherlands as an interior woodwork and door company. Three years later they made their first piece of furniture. In 1910 Siebe’s son, Hollis S. Baker, joined the company as a salesman and throughout most of Baker’s existence it was a family-controlled business, even being sold and repurchased in the 1920s-1930s. Baker is considered a design legacy and over the years they have produced furniture designed by such greats as Donald Desky and KEM Weber in the early 20th century, Finn Juhl in the mid-20th century, and John Saladino and Barbara Barry in the late 20th century. They have introduced many award-winning furniture collections including, during the 1940s and 1950s, Far East Collection, the first Asian furniture collection manufactured in the USA; and Palladian Collection an Italian neo Classic design. Then, in the 1960s and 1970s the introduction of country English and French Provincial featuring the reproduction of choice antiques from the home of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford. After decades of being in the Baker family’s hands, in 1969 it was sold to Magnavox then in 1986 to Kohler Co. Today it remains a part of Kohler and operates out of North Carolina. Still one of the top names in furniture. Superior style, Iconic Designer, and Reputable manufacturer. These Baker Far East Collection cabinets by Michael Taylor have it ALL!!!
