Unique Swedish Art Deco, Modern Neoclassical Cabinet, Carl Malmsten Signed, 1932

About the Item

A Rare and Important 'Swedish Grace' sideboard, cupboard or buffet by Swedish Master, Carl Malmsten delicately constructed of inlaid birch and elmwood depicting a scene of Saint George and the dragon on the central interior door and six scenes of Swedish cultural life on the exterior doors. Malmsten was the leading figure of the Swedish Grace movement which occurred during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, uniting Neoclassical harmony with a modern aesthetic and this cabinet is fine example. Swedish Grace occurred simultaneously as the Art Deco in France but offered a more restrained approach and had as its goal, "Good Design for All." The interior has ten storage spaces including six drawers on the lower levels for cutlery opened by brass ring pulls. There are three additional closed storage compartments on the mid-level, two with sliding panels on the sides and a central main closet with St. George and the dragon in the center. There is additional large flat open storage on the top level. The size of the total cabinet storage area is W 40 x H 39 x D 17. The entire cabinet sits on a sober, modern stand giving it a slender, elegant profile. This is a 'piece unique' inlaid with Carl Malmsten's initials on the interior: CM, Anno 1932.
