19th Century Italian Painted Oak Commode

About the Item

Commode / Chest of drawers hand-crafted in central Italy (Lazio) in the early 1800s using oak. This is a beautifully simple commode that despite its rustic origins has a very elegant look given by its straight lines and beautiful patina and decorations. The chest features a two-boards top with square edges and corners on top of three inset drawers. The drawers are all about the same size and all show beautiful hand-made dovetail joints. The sides are simple flat panels, and the whole case sits on the original bracket feet and angular molding baseboard. The chest of drawers is a very spacious and without having a large footprint. The light color and decorations make it look more delicate than it really is, because this one was built to last and they did not skim on solid hardwood to make it. As mentioned, the chest of drawers is very simple in lines, this is most likely a piece that was likely made for a country home, nevertheless it now presents beautiful denim blue motif along the edges of the drawers, the top and the sides. The decorations, albeit very simple, works perfectly with the piece and provides depth were there is none. This chest of drawers is a beautiful piece that can be both decorative and practical. Its simple lines will make it look great with many different styles of furniture and its patina and color will also look fantastic with both antiques as well as modern furniture.
