18th Century Italian Inlaid Walnut Commode

About the Item

Commode hand-crafted in Southern Tuscany (Italy) in the mid 1700s using walnut. The commode can be considered a neoclassical commode, however it has some elements that make it a bit different, like its slightly cabriole legs. The commode features three thin inlay drawers with ogee edges and inlaid drawer fronts. Although the drawers do not show dovetail joints, one can still see the beautiful square nails that were used to secure the drawer fronts to the drawers. The thin rectangular inlay present on the drawer fronts is repeated on the side panels of the case as well as on the top. The top is composed of four panels with ogee edges and rounded front corners. The commode is additionally adorned with a scalloped apron on three sides. This is a beautiful chest of drawers, with simple and elegant lines, making it the perfect piece for a bedroom, but also an entryway or corridor. The old walnut has a warm, dark amber color and the delicate inlay provides depth without being overly decorative. The drawers still work well and the commode can be used on a daily basis.
