18th Century Inlay Italian Neoclassical Walnut Commode / Chest

About the Item

Neoclassical (Louis xvi) commode hand-made in Italy in the early 1700s using walnut and pegged construction. This is an absolute beauty that will catch your, and your guests', eye because of its elegant proportions and color. The chest features very straight lines, as typical of the style, and shows three overlay drawers with ogee edges. The only decoration in the chest is the criss-cross pattern of the inlay satinwood veneer that frames the fronts of the drawers. The inlay both softens the lines of the commode as well as adds some depth to the piece because of the dark-light contrast. The top features three boards with square edges, and show some stains and faded spots because of usage. The sides are made of inset panels framed by flat molding. The commode still sits on its original tapered legs. This is a commode we found during an estate sale in Rome, where it had been for most of its life. Its beautiful lines will make it a perfect piece for a room with both antiques as well as modern and contemporary furniture. If you like brand new furniture, but are looking for a piece with history that will fit well, this is the one. Besides being a decorative piece, it will also work well as storage for daily use.
