About the Item

A classic French Louis Philippe Period (1830-1848) chest of drawers. Hand-crafted in France in the mid-19th century, featuring bookmatched highly figured crotch flame mahogany and warm rich walnut, high-quality solid wood construction, having a rectangular boarded top with canted corners and molded edge, over the conforming case fitted with four drawers, the top drawer with original inset wooden knobs, the larger lower three drawers affixed with patinated brass shield escutcheons, all with hand-cut dovetail joinery, molding trim base, rising on bracket feet. circa 1830s Clean, simple lines, striking woodgrain patterns, and nicely aged rich mellow patina that adds a comfortable elegant rustic warmth! Retaining original antique character and charm throughout, including age appropriate separation at side panels, expected wear consistent with age and use. HISTORY: In the years following the French Revolution, former aristocrats returned to their homes only to find many of their belongings seized and sold. After the Bourbon Restoration (1814-1830) when Charles X (1824-1830) issued reparations, wealthy families were once again able to purchase high-quality furniture. Cabinetmakers resumed the tradition of innovative design. The increasingly affluent middle class also sought well-made pieces, leading to a higher demand for French furniture. Many of these people, while wealthy, lived in small houses and apartments. Their need for pieces that fit in their homes resulted in pieces that are still highly sought-after because of their handsome design and smaller proportions. King Louis Philippe's (1773-1850) casual nature reflected this style’s informal, comfortable build. Fine furniture no longer was restricted to royalty and aristocrats, leading designs to turn from extravagant and formal to refined and polished. Louis Philippe Furniture was functional, elegant, but still very simple, typically with clean, rounded, gentle lines (doucine) and sparse adornments, with dark woods like mahogany, rosewood, walnut the most popular materials. A focal point of Louis Philippe furniture is the color and grain of the woods used for constructing pieces. The top ébénistes (cabinetmakers) selected woods that accentuated the fluidity of the lines. These characteristics have helped contribute to the style’s longevity and desirability.
