About the Item

Large Danish chest of drawers, crafted in 1833 by cabinetmaker Niels P. Dyhr in Nykøbing Mors, Denmark. A highly decorative and exceptionally well-preserved piece, showcasing rich, original polychrome painting throughout. The chest is topped with a profiled cornice featuring dentil carving, and a carved scalloped frieze painted in alternating blue and green tones. The body is painted in a warm cinnabar red and adorned with hand-painted floral garlands, birds, and figural motifs in vibrant polychrome colors. The front features five drawers: The narrow top drawer is painted with stylized drapery and small tassels in golden hues. The central drawers are richly decorated with symmetrical bird pairs and a flower vase, framed by painted borders and floral ornamentation. The second and bottom drawers also include garlands and single birds painted at each side. Both sides of the chest are decorated with rare figural scenes and mythical animals, painted in the same meticulous folk style. Original locks and key are preserved. This chest is in museum-quality condition – entirely original, with superbly preserved surface decoration. A remarkable example of early 19th-century Danish folk craftsmanship and decorative art. Minor flaw: Missing base moulding on the lower right side.
