About the Item

Imagine where this gorgeous piece might have been in its past life. Perhaps stately mansions with warm block panel, high ceilings and crown molding for days. The wealthy would have had this piece in their butler's quarters to assist in supporting the family. Yes, if this piece could share just a fraction of what it has witnessed over the centuries, how wonderful it would be! This stunning c. 1830's desk/chest is made of fine figured mahogany. The extended top drawer is a fall front secretary that pulls down and out on a brass half-arc track to reveal a striking leather covered desk area and wonderful little nooks along the back of the opening. The leather has two plugged areas resulting from access to the hardware for the drawer pulls. The trim of the drawer fronts is an ornate recessed double-scalloped trim with a simple round over to the upper case's front edging. The pulls have been recently replaced with period specific reproductions. The upper drawer face is joined together with a unique fitted biscuit technique while the chest drawer front have been joined with dove-tail of that era. The desk stands on simple tapered feet with wheels. We assume the top has been replaced at some point. This case piece is truly a work of art in furniture. It has beautiful design detail and is smartly constructed with both form and function in mind. A fabulous addition to so many room decors.
