Early 20th-Century Marquetry Commode with Marble Top from Maison Rinck

About the Item

We present you this wonderful commode, designed during the transition period of Louis XV, boasting three drawers and three cabinets. Its marquetry depicts floral and foliage patters as well as musical instruments from the ancient times. It is a creation of the renowned Maison Rinck, a Parisian furniture manufacturer situated in Faubourg Saint Antoine. Its lavish gilded bronze accents include decorations that embellish our commode's drawer handles, feet, ornamental drops at the bottom, and keyhole plates. Topped with a violet Breccia marble, it features a projection at the front and a receding base at the rear. The commode opens to reveal three front drawers, two of which lack a central partition. Its oak frame bears a double brand mark from the Maison Rinck which is a testament to its authenticity. The incredibly intricate marquetry work showcases three cartouches on the front, comprising two ovals and one rectangle, along with an oval cartouche on each side which mostly feature musical instruments. This commode in a very good condition and would make a fantastic and eye-catching addition to any living room or entryway. La Maison Rinck was founded by the cabinetmaker Jacques Rinck in Alsace in 1841. However, it was his grandson, Maurice Rinck, who breathed new life into it with an Art Deco spirit when he took over the family business in the 1930s. Rinck and Lucie Renaudot (a gold medalist in innovation at the 1937 World Exposition) combined their talents to create a dining room for the International Exhibition of Arts and Applied Sciences in Modern Life in 1937. In 1957, Maurice Rinck and Louis Sognot were awarded the Grand Prize at the Brussels World Exposition, tied with Citroën and Dior, for their collection of furniture. Growing in popularity, the Rinck house began producing furniture for renowned decorators and interior designers, such as Ruhlmann and Leleu, crafting unique pieces that now form part of the company's heritage. The Rinck gallery, located on Rue des Saints Pères in Paris, quickly became known for its avant-garde yet tradition-infused design, always with impeccable taste. During the 1980s and 1990s, Rinck became the leading exporter of furniture for the luxury industries.
