Early American 18th Century Chippendale Tiger Maple Tall Chest of Drawers

About the Item

Stunning historic pieces like this don't come along every day! This c. 1780's Tiger Maple Chippendale tall dresser with 6 drawers with brass drawer pulls was designed and built in the New England area around 1780. It's birthplace was most likely New Hampshire. This is a stellar example of beautiful craftsmanship and design that have stood the test of time. Those with discriminating tastes or for the serious furniture collectors, this piece will be worth further review. The six drawers are graduated in size. Most hand-forged locks are intact, with one missing, as shown in the pictures. The tiger maple wood showcases amazing figuration. The joints of the case and the drawers are all hand-cut dove tail joints. The back is wide rough cut pine boards nailed in with rose-head nails of this era. The sides are also pine. The top is stunning in the patina and natural wear to the wood over 240 plus years! The trim work is comprised of molded cornice with a beautiful and simply hand-carved bracket base. The pieces is finished with brass hardware. The overall piece is in very good condition. There are areas with minor wood separation due to shrinkage cracks. There has been minor restoration over the years to the base, a drawer joint and facing corner. The wear marks on the wood are beautiful and add such character and curiosity to this piece. If only it could talk and tell the tales of what it has seen!

If these two chairs could speak, the history they might share. These rare and very early chairs are hand-carved and constructed in a refined primitive country design, reflective of the era. Utilizing a stunning, rich maple, the top rails and cross rails flow with ribbon designs for a touch of elegance. The backs of these chairs are more delicate than others of this period and style. Higher, thinner rails and styles found in these chair backs, mixed with the heavy squared legs and wide band stretchers make these an impressive example of an Early American country chair...
