About the Item

An English black commode from the 19th century, with Chinoiserie low-relief décor, guilloche motifs and five drawers. Created in England during the 19th century, this lacquered commode features a rectangular top with Chinoiserie décor, accented with a guilloche frieze on the edge. Five drawers (two small ones over three larger ones), adorned with motifs echoed from the top, complete the ensemble. With its black, brown, red and green tones and low-relief décor, this 19th century Chinoiserie commode will bring an exotic presence to any home, perhaps displayed in a bedroom, living room or hallway.

A sophisticated Queen Anne-period chinoiserie japanned chest raised on elegant cabriole legs with 'pony foot' carved detailing. This early-18th century chest on stand demonstrates the charming and highly fashionable English domestic interpretation of oriental scenes of pagodas, rockwork, trees, ornamental bridges, mythical birds, and figures dressed in the oriental manner, holding parasols and cavorting in gardens. All in remarkable condition having survived some three hundred years.
