English George III Style Chest of Drawers with Yew-Wood Oyster Veneer

About the Item

This lovely and functional chest is like the story of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady since she has been made more sophisticated by several additions. Originally an antique pine chest of drawers, it has been clad with a beautiful, thick yew-wood oyster veneer and given reproduction Chippendale pulls & bracket feet. England, circa 1850 with additions. Note: You should always request a shipping quote.     A very fine Empire commode in a light-colored Cuban/ West Indies mahogany with satinwood inlays featuring an upper drawer with small inlaid lidded compartments with original turned knobs. Line inlays continue throughout the plinth, with the top banded in ebonized trim. The top drawer is inlaid with a pair of opposing griffins whose tails sprout oak leaves. A mythological scene in the center arch of the middle drawer appears to be a depiction of Ariadne (daughter of King Minos of Crete) and Dionysus (or Bacchus: the god of wine, mirth and an itinerant wanderer). He is squeezing the juice from a bundle of grapes into her goblet. It could portray their first meeting at Naxos, upon awakening to the reality that she had been left behind by Theseus.
