French Empire Period Flame Grain Mahogany Commode Chest with Black Marble Top

About the Item

French Empire period commode (chest) in matched flame grain mahogany, Egyptian caryatid columns with ormolu head and feet, swan ormolu mount to lower frieze, laurel leaf escutcheons and round pulls. This handsome chest retains its original separate black marble top, and the four drawers (the top drawer is part of the upper frieze and has no projecting handles, but as it is proud of the lower three drawers there are carved finger pulls hidden under its edge which makes opening and closing the drawer quite smooth) give wonderful storage space. During Napoleon's reign Egyptian motifs were very popular, as were swans and laurel leaves, so this chest was totally au courant -or cutting edge if you will- at the time of its creation. This chest could easily find itself in a dining room as an extra serving piece, or a bedroom or elegant dressing room for clothing, or a living room where a focal point chest is needed. Circa 1800-1815.
