Large Hand Painted Blanket Chest of Three Drawers, Hungary dated 1872

About the Item

The soft colors are all original on this hand-painted antique chest of 3 drawers from Hungary. The lovely panels with hand painted flourishes were a traditional folk art design of the era set against a brown faux wood finish, adding a cheerful feel to this chest. Generations of use are revealed in the distress to the paint, worn down in many sections revealing the natural pine wood below. Along the top, while difficult to see now are the remains of a family name and date. This large pine chest of drawers has been restored; a wax finish adds a soft luster to the piece, and the three drawers function with two brass pulls each. This blanket chest is solid, stable and functional, including drawers. All scratches, cracks, dings, dried old worm holes, and age related separation are reflective of age and do not detract from the beauty nor function of this special hand painted chest. Many sections especially around the top show more wear, cracks and distress. The newer, professionally applied soft gray painted finish (with blue and white undertones) adds a touch of life and interest to this heavy oak chest. The carved panel drawers, fluted tapered feet and fluted side accents are gently distressed adding to the vintage feel of the dresser.
