Large Raymond Loewy Inspired Yellow Chapter One Gentlemans Chest Armoire

About the Item

This model is nearly impossible to find. Moreover, yellow is the most sought after option. Combined with the fact that we've restored this piece to outstanding condition, we're certain you WILL NOT find a more sublime rendition. A rare incarnation of the Broyhill Chapter One line, this yellow Gentleman’s Chest marries futuristic exuberance with impressive craftsmanship. It measures approximately 39½ inches (100 cm) wide, 18¾ inches (48 cm) deep, and 45½ inches (116 cm) high—proportions that offer generous storage and presence while retaining a sleek, vertical profile that works beautifully against wall surfaces without overwhelming narrow spaces. Part of the coveted “Chapter One” collection—deeply inspired by Raymond Loewy’s pioneering work in plastic-molded furniture—this piece is one of the hardest to find, specifically in this vivid yellow “Cycolac” polymer and with the Gentleman’s-Chest layout. The molded drawer and door fronts in canary yellow are original, their color saturated through the material, giving both visual impact and lasting vibrancy. The body, base, and exposed wood elements have been expertly refinished—professionally sanded, primed, and repainted in a clean, high-gloss white—restoring contrast and preserving design lines. Functionality is thoughtful and striking. On the left, a cabinet door opens to reveal removable, adjustable shelving—ideal for larger items or display. On the right, three drawers behind double hinged doors offer storage in the same white fronts, closing softly and operating smoothly on ball-bearing metal tracks. The laminate top and yellow drawer surfaces have been buff-polished to a glassy shine, echoing the era’s love of high gloss and sheen. Condition: VERY GOOD restored condition. Restored with all new white paint on the body and plinth bases. Yellow drawers are original with only very minor imperfections. Drawers and laminate top have been buff-polished to high gloss shine Visually, this chest stands at the intersection of retro futurism and decorative art. It calls to mind 1970s visions of tomorrow—bright plastics, aerodynamic curves, unexpected color—but translated into functional luxury. Ideal for a bedroom needing storage that doubles as sculpture, or a living space where graphic color, clean form, and nostalgic personality are celebrated. It pairs beautifully with polished chrome accents, mirrored surfaces, or warm woods for contrast. Broyhill’s Chapter One Collection is officially harder to find and more sought after than the Raymond Loewy orginals. With all due respect to Raymond Loewy, there really is something magical about the Chapter One line. Maybe they’re just more fun and approachable. Maybe it’s the proportions and practicality. Regardless, they’re one of our favourite collections of all time. The restoration team pulled no punches on this Chapter One Yellow Highboy Dresser, and the end result exceeded our expectations. Every inch of painted wood (including base) was professionally sanded primed and painted to match the original bright white. The laminate top and canary yellow molded plastic door / drawer fronts were finally buffed and polished to a glassy shine. Unlike the traditional Chapter One Highboy, this "Gentleman's Chest" version is step up in style and function. The open cabinet space on the left features a removable and adjustable height shelf, painted in gloss white of course. The right side has two hinged doors that open to reveal an additional (3) drawers. These also sport the signature white facades, and open / close with ease on the ball-bearing metal tracks. This dresser was built like a tank, but looks like a Lamborghini. It’s tough to see this one go, but we know it will be loved. Broyhill’s Chapter one collection borrowed from the plastic mold injection designs made famous by legendary designer Raymond Loewy. Like Loewy, these Chapter One Dressers employ the futuristic use of color and materials in a way that had not been seen before. The bright yellow plastic captures the playful spirit of the 1970s. The Gentleman's Chest Cabinet is supported by a lacquered plinth base with rounded corners. This colorful, curvaceous case-good could have blended in nicely on the set of 2001 A Space Odyssey. The space-age look has never been more desirable, which may help explain the recent scarcity of all things Chapter One.
