About the Item

This mid-nineteenth century French Louis XVI style commode secretary features fluted bronze columns at the corners with striated bronze plaques above and below. Additional bronze banding creates inset borders on the door fronts, sides, lower drawer, and upper drawer fronts. The cabinet sits on finial feet additionally detailed with bronze. The false upper drawer fronts conceal a drop down writing surface with a red leather top that pulls out. The interior cavity of the secretary has four drawers; two on the left-hand side, a deeper drawer on the right-hand side with divided compartments, and a central drawer that pulls out with a pen rest and additional divided cavities. Below the drop down front are two doors that open to reveal an interior with three half drawer pull outs that were originally used for storing documents flat. Below the doors is another drawer fitted with two square bronze handles. Each interior is constructed of amboyna burl wood with inset inlaid borders of mahogany. Includes one key with functioning locks. c. 1860.
