20th Century Royal Francois Link chest of drawers, oak with gilt bronze
Located in Berlin, DE
FRENCH CHEST OF DRAWERS DESIGN AFTER FRANÇOIS LINKE & LÉON MESSAGÉ Finely chased, gilded fittings. Solid beech wood top panel mottled marble top above a pair of doors concealed by a laurel, seaweed and cane back water cascade down bowl and a dolphin amidst seaweed, applied with delicate scroll frames and stained floral lattice marquetry in the upper corners and on each lower corner with a floral ray. This grandiose and opulent commode is Linke's second version (bis) of his famous 'Commode coquille: Coquetterie et Modestie', index number 559. The original model was linked to index number 553, 'Commode Louis XV Figaro (Scène du Barbier de Séville) , and together the two commodes formed an integral and important part of Linke's gold-medal-winning stand at the Paris Exposition of 1900, where they flanked his most monumental work, the Grande Bibliothèque. The 559 chest of drawers was delivered to Elias Meyer in London in September 1909 and after his death in 1925 it was sold on to King Fouad...

Pair of neoclassical Italian chests of drawers in inlaid wood, XVIII century
Located in Vicenza, IT
This exceptional pair of Italian neoclassical 18th century dressers in wood richly inlaid on the front, sides and 4 truncated pyramid legs are top-quality example of Italian 18th century cabinetmaking. The pair of commodes are originals from the second part of the 18th century (1780). The front of the pair of commodes is divided into three levels of drawers, two thinner ones at the top and bottom and a thicker central one. This arrangement makes the front of the pair of drawers even more elegant. On the front of the central drawer stands a large oval with two mirror-image neoclassical figures represented. Rich and complex foliate motifs start from the oval and extend gracefully across the entire surface. Corresponding to the upper and lower drawers, both frontally and laterally, runs a band with inlays depicting classical style garlands with ribbons, cameos and phytomorphic elements. On the side, inside geometric figures created through the combination of various wood essences there are other garlands and recurring elements in the inlays of the neoclassical period. The pillars are also inlaid with floral and leaf decorations. The four truncated pyramid legs are also inlaid. These eighteenth-century Italian chests of drawers were exhibited at the Triennale Museum in Milan on the occasion of the exhibition "Il Salone, la città", which took place in conjunction with the "Salone del Mobile" in Milan. We have all the documentation attesting to this museum exhibition. The dressers are entirely inlaid with the use of different wood essences. The inlaid surfaces have also been pyrographed and burnished and are in excellent condition. This very refined technique allows you to create greater definition of the decorations, giving three-dimensionality and chiaroscuro to the drawings. With a dark background, the elegant inlays create neoclassical designs inspired by the taste of the time and the famous furniture of the Lombard cabinetmaker Giuseppe Maggiolini di Parabiago, who brought the inlay technique applied to neoclassical furniture to the highest levels. The marble top is contemporary. The handles and mouthpieces of the locks, also original, are in gilded bronze. The neoclassical furniture of the eighteenth century The last quarter of the eighteenth century coincides with the affirmation of the neoclassical taste, in opposition to the previous rococo or baroque style, particularly widespread and appreciated in Lombardy. An echo of this transition is visible in Maggiolini's first works, namely rounded chests...

19th Century Neoclassical French Marble-Top Commode W/Exquisite Brass Accents
Located in Atlanta, GA
A French Neoclassical commode, with marble top and exquisite brass accents, from the 19th century. This antique chest from France features a rectangular-shaped gray marble top, over case which houses four drawers (upper drawer is disguised within the top frieze), flanked within a pair of rounded column style front side posts, a straight skirt, and presented upon rounded front feet and block style feet at rear. Beautiful brass accents adorn the chest all down its front facade; from the foliate embellishments across the top and again at the bottom of the legs, the nicely decorated knob pulls and escutcheons on the drawer fronts, and finally the wrapped banding on the top and bottom of the columns. The marble is a medium gray with lighter and darker veining, which is a lovely contrast against the gorgeous fruitwood. Note that there are some scratches to the marble top which can be seen in the additional images. This 19th century French Neoclassical commode...

18th Century French Louis XVI Period Parquetry Commode Commode with Marble Top
Located in Gloucestershire, GB
A Fine French Louis XVI Period Parquetry Commode with Unusual Oyster Veneered Decoration. This fine commode is of typical Louis XVI form with chamfered angles, reflected in the shaping of the original white marble top, but otherwise rectangular in shape. The piece consists of three long drawers with original ormolu escutcheon plates and handles and a key. The commode is decorated entirely in parquetry in a range of woods such as kingwood and what appears to be olive wood or cocus. The top drawer front employs a simple repeating geometric relief but the other drawers, and the sides of the commode, employ panels of oyster veneered timber set in to geometric frames. Oyster veneering, or oystering, involves cutting through small branches or roots creating small oyster shell-like veneers and then inlaying them in decorative panels. The decoration on the this commode is abstract veneers of contrasting shapes, sizes and colours being laid next to each other in a pattern. This extremely unusual commode...

Louis XVI Style Commode after a Model by Jean-François Leleu, circa 1870
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Fine Louis XVI Style gilt bronze Mounted Commode after a Model by Jean-François Leleu. French, circa 1870. This important commode has a moulded rectangular Brocatelle Violette du Jura marble top above a frieze drawer with a pierced foliate cast panel, above two panelled long drawers quarter-veneered sans travers. The fluted angles of the commode are headed by scrolled acanthus cast clasps and it is raised on turned tapering legs with toupie feet. The commode is based on the celebrated 18th century model, by Jean-François Leleu (1729-1807), now conserved at the Petit Trianon at Versailles. It was placed there in 1867 following an exhibition organised at the request of Empress Eugénie in memory of Queen Marie-Antoinette. The commode was further exhibited in Paris in the retrospective part of the Exposition de l' Union centrale des arts décoratifs in 1882. 19th Century Louis XVI Style Marquetry Commode in the Manner of Riesener
By Jean-Henri Riesener
Located in London, GB
A very fine Louis XVI style gilt-bronze mounted marquetry commode After the design by Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806) After a model by Jean-Henri Riesener, supplied to Princess Adélaïde for Versailles. Constructed from amaranth with veneered tulipwood "en semelle" and dressed with a profusion of finely cast & hand-chased ormolu mounts, with a Sarrancolin marble platform, atop a breakfront frieze, set with three drawers, over a unified central panel divided in two drawers depicting a 'bois de bout' marquetry floral still life within a gilt-bronze frame, flanked by panels of quarter-cut tulipwood with ormolu handles suspended from lover's knot bows, with conforming matched panels to the concave sides. The apron is mounted with a finely cast central scroll, and the canted corners dressed with cascading ormolu foliate mounts terminating in lion's paw feet. French, circa 1910 Madame Adélaïde's commode The design for this commode was one of the earliest royal commissions awarded to Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806), the master craftsman who was later appointed cabinetmaker to Louis XVI and his court in 1774. The commode, with its architectural features, extensive ormolu mounts and immaculate marquetry work, was ordered in 1776 and delivered that same year for Madame Adélaïde (1732-1800), the daughter of king Louis XV and Marie Leszczynska. The commode was later moved to château de Bellevue when it was given to her by king Louis XVI. The famous commode was later part of the Earl of Carnarvon's collection, who also bought furniture made for Napoleon. Carnarvon's wife, Lady Elmina Wombwell, was the child of Alfred de Rotschild, which may explain the post-revolutionary history of the royal commode. In 2018, the Riesener commode was bought for the nation for the sum of 3.5m€ and returned to Versailles.
