About the Item

Rococo chest of drawers with marquetry decoration and Portovenere marble. Naples, Italy, circa 1760. Trapezoidal chest of drawers with a crossbow and sinuous profiles, with two drawers with key closure without shelves, decorated by a marquetry net made of rectangles; These contain small roses of the winds inside octagons of concave sides and leaves in the corners. It is the same decorative motif that is repeated on the sides of the furniture. The top panel follows the lines of the dresser, and is made of marble, with a fine molding of metal gilded along its three main fronts to highlight it. The great abundance of curves and countercurves in all the lines and surfaces of the furniture place us the chest of drawers inside the Rococo, as do the fact that the drawers are not highlighted to leave prominence to the decoration and the consequent lack of shelves that visually separate the drawers. The lack of gilded bronze leads to a center of importance located outside France and its most direct influence. The marquetry, of great quality, hiding the drawers to maintain the harmony and proportions of the whole and the almost total absence of gilded metals place us the accomplishment of the work in the Italy of the 18th century, provenance that the top of the chest of drawers confirms. The stone is a variety of marble known as "portoro" or Portovenere, and its main quarry is located in the area of La Spezia (northwest Italy). Similarities with certain aspects of the contemporary Aragonese furniture, in addition to its own characteristics, further locate the manufacture: Neapolitan surroundings. Chests of drawers appeared in France at the end of the 17th century, and soon became a typology so common that they became the most manufactured in the main centers of cabinetmaking since the beginning of the eighteenth century, each maintaining its own characteristics together with a production of greater French influence.
