This grand and distinctive piece of furniture from Northern Brittany is known as a “buffet malouin” and was created in the late 17th century. These types of cabinets were created for important homes in the historic port city of Saint-Malo. The design, with large octagonal molded panels, double colonettes, and finely cut brass fittings, is unique to other French furniture of the period. The design was directly influenced by the Dutch mariner carpenters living in Saint-Malo at the time (the Dutch beeldenkast cabinet shows similarities)
The large four-door cabinet was carved in oak, as was most of the other “malouin” furniture pieces. It is an imposing and impressive piece, standing over 7 feet tall and nearly 7 feet wide. The front of the piece has twisted, double colonettes, multi-profiled cushion-shaped octagonal panels, and finely cut brass key hole escutcheons, drawer pulls, and lozenge plates. There are 3 drawers, 2 of which are full sized, with a smaller drawer in the center. 3 large bun feet along the front hold up the entire piece, while 2 block feet support the rear.
Each door has its own functioning key and lock, with a yet another key for the center drawer. Door and drawer panels are solid and impressive old pieces of oak, which still open and close with ease, indicating the quality of construction and great care that this piece has received over the centuries.
The “meuble malouin” in the form of a large 4 door buffet is not often easily found. Research shows photos of several models in various states that have come to surface, but they were not nearly pervasive as French case...

This extremely rare, Antique French Cupboard, is from the Château de Loyat in Brittany, which I believe dates back to the 1500, was in a condition, that Antique dealers can only dream of. The French Cupboard or Cabinet, is exactly what you would expect, a 300-year-old antique French Cabinet to look like, if no one ever touched the finish, let alone restore the Antique Cupboard. Our opinion is, that this Antique French Cupboard or Cabinet, could have been made in the late 1600s or early 1700s and if I did not know that this Cupboard was made from French White Oak, one would have thought it was constructed of iron, based on its weight. Our centuries old French Cupboard, was constructed without the use of any nails or glue, for the entire Antique Cabinet was assembled using wooden pegs. Our Old Plank restoration department, has just completed a 240-hour conservation procedure, wherein lieu of just replacing the old worn wood oak boards, we chose to harden them and only used small fillets of antique French Oak for repair. Yes, this became a labor of love, but for us, to find an antique French Cabinet, in this virgin untouched state, is quite rare nowadays, so, the choice was made to conserve, rather than restore, which required triple the labor. We are certain that this wonderful handcrafted, stained oak cabinet was designed by Leonard Francis Wyburd (1865-1958). We are certain, because of several style elements that are typical for his designs for Liberty & Co in the late 19th century. We have no pictures in books or other evidence, but the pieces from his hand that can be found on the internet reveal style elements that are very similar and they were used by no one else. The design of this incredibly artistic piece shows both the influences of Medieval and Rural Britain. It were these early and amazing pieces of furniture from the Liberty Studio (headed by Wyburd) that made people across the continent speak of the 'Stile Liberty'. Designers like Wyburd and pieces of furniture like this amazing cabinet, influenced and shaped the entire development of the Jugendstil and Art Nouveau in Europe. That too makes this rare piece important for collectors and possibly for museums around the world.
This cupboard is a work of art and it is an absolute joy to look at. It is all made of solid and stained oak and apart from the stunning and impressive overal design with the overhanging top with supporting beams, there are some key style elements that make this cabinet really stand out. First of all, there is the ever so true saying which is embossed in copper in beautiful Arts and Crafts letters which reads 'WELCOME IS THE BEST CHEER'. Secondly, there are the rare leather panels in the doors which come with (faded) images in slight reliëf. The one on the left is of a man in a hat and tights and he is playing a mandolin. Fantastic vintage Spanish Colonial Revival style oak cupboard, hutch, cabinet, or dry bar comprised of hand carved oak, wood pegs & shelves, & brass. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. This piece has lots of wonderful patina. We have added new magnetic latches to doors as they we just not staying shut on their own. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Late 19th Century through 20th Century. We really have a hard time determining age of this piece. It is fabulous no matter and is priced for its beauty and not its age.
Enigma definition: A person, object, or thing that is mysterious, puzzling, or difficult to understand. This cupboard is just that… definitely puzzling and mysterious!! And I sure wish it could talk because I bet it has some GREAT stories to share!! Something tells me it’s seen a few things and has had quite an interesting history. It is a one-piece cabinet comprised of oak with a top and bottom section and an open center section. The doors have carvings with (what we believe are) dates back to the 1600’s. The door fronts remind me of vintage livery cupboards… they are nostalgic and quite mystifying!! We don’t believe the whole cupboard is quite the same age, hence, more mystery! We believe the body or frame of the cupboard is Early 1900’s, possibly earlier, and was made from reclaimed lumber or someone possibly took pieces of an old cabinet and repurposed it. The top section is constructed with mortise & tenon joints (no nails!), the inner top & base cabinets each enclose a single adjustable wood shelf with aged wood peg brackets, and stepped siderails or shelf supports.
