Please take a look at the striking detail on this antique English lectern. Seen directly from the front the central framed panel has three substantial columns with flat capitals that support tremendously sculptural arches. Notice how the arches are interlaced reflecting the great architectural impact generated by this building method. The entire piece stands on a plinth base that not only gives a practical advantage in sturdy construction by also a visual impression of strength and solidity. Both sides have an open triangular profile that enables the lectern to be moved as well as to be grasped when the speaker needed a place for hands. Both the front and rear of each side has a profile of columns above a bracket base that echoes the design seen on the front. This attention to detail means the lectern was fully visible from all three sides and how important it was to have a pleasing aspect. The substantial ledge has a lip at the base to support a large book while a lecture was being delivered. This lectern was originally in a boy's school outside of Newcastle in England and was used on a daily basis by a professor there. The amazing substantial quality of the constriction has ensured its usefulness for over one hundred and fifty years. The beauty of the pine timber, the warmth of the patina and the ingenuity of the design continue to be enchanting as this lectern still functions today as it did in the nineteenth century.
