About the Item

Antique French carved oak drop front desk liquor cabinet Breton Brittany 19th c ~Direct from France~ 19th century French cabinet with stunning Brittany carvings throughout. Perfect for a storage piece, excellent as a writing desk, with it’s drop front writing area, and imagine it as a liquor/wine cabinet! ~Beveled, carved edge top over a drop front door that features dimensional carved Breton figures; traditionally dressed man, sitting upon a chair, holding a musical instrument; woman standing by a water well, holding a bucket. The carved setting included intricate details to the water well, the clothing, and the trees and cobblestone building in the background.~ ~Carved panel framed with carved moulding and carved columns to the sides. Door opens down to provide large desk or writing area and interior storage.~ ~Full length, carved and serpentine edged drawer below the door, with carved trim below~ ~Open lower cabinet has carved panel to the back, and carved, fluted legs to the front~ ~Traditional Breton “ship’s wheel” spindle trim to three sides of the lower~ ~Quality throughout with dovetailed drawers~ ~Well built by craftsmen of the period~ ~c1890~ Brief note about Brittany style antique French furniture The Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France are manifest in the furniture produced in this region. The Breton style is as distinctive as its special culture and easily recognizable due to it’s very ornate carvings. A hallmark feature is the symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent a strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life. The local economy in Brittany was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime activities, so one often finds circles and ship's wheels as a common decorative motif. Typically the furniture is carved out of chestnut or oak, with a dark finish. Measurements 42.75”ht. x 34.5” x 15.75”. Green felt area inside, 11” x 25”.
