About the Item
An Exceptionally Fine Quality English Well Figured Burl Amboyne and Coromandel Ladies or Gents English early Travelling Writing Slope of outstanding quality and unusually large proportions, with quite unusual Pewter strung inlay and highly ornate Mother of Pearl scroll work inlay decoration, early 19th Century, complete with original fitted interior, to include two secret drawers.
The hinged lid opening to reveal a fitted interior with its original woven dark red fabric writing area. The rectangular flat top lid with a central decorative inlaid plaque.
Condition: Professionally restored with its original writing fabric area which has evidence of use with the central folding hinged area has some splitting in areas. Lock is present and working with key. Two crystal ink bottles of a later period.
This exotic wooden Writing Slope is one of the finest examples ever offered.

Burl Amboyne aften confused with Thuya Wood or Burr Walnut, Amboyna is a profusely burred wood that is a part of the Pterocarpus genus, most commonly obtained from the Narra Tree and is native to Southeastern Asia, Northern Australasia, and the Western Pacific Ocean islands.
It is the most expensive and sought-after of all the burl species and is used for highly decorative small wooden decorative such as Tea Caddies, Jewellery Boxes and wonderful examples of Writing Slopes such as this one offered. *Next time you take a ride in a Rolls Royce the visible dashboard interior will probably be inlaid using Amboyne.
