English Country House George I Walnut Double Dome Bureau Bookcase

About the Item

Very rare George I double dome walnut bureau bookcase, it is of a smaller than the regular size and so can fit in most homes. This George I walnut bureau bookcase was made circa 1720 in a London workshop and is of a good small size. In my 46 years of trading, I have only owned 2 18thc walnut bureau bookcases with the double domed tops. This is a most desirable feature and always set them apart from the usual straight cornice design. The cabinetmaker would have to take so much more time with its construction, he would also need to have the specialist skills to be able complete the complicated task. The double dome top with matching returns on the cornice is set above the pair of original hand bevelled plate 2-part mirror. At this time is was almost impossible to have a one piece plate glass as the rolling of glass had not been invented for large scale. The double doors opening to reveal a fitted interior with multiple compartments.. The bureau that is below the top section is fitted a well drawer and then a pair of half width drawers with another 2 graduated full width drawers under before it stands on shaped bracket feet. The sloping fall front that is supported by sliding supports, open to reveal a superb interior that is fitted a stepped interior. The interior drawers hiding 2 secret guinea drawers and the 4 pillars that also open. The sliding well opens to also gain access to the well drawer and has a secret slide under. Imagine how wonderful and pleasure ownership of this George I walnut bureau bookcase will give you. Your family and friends will be enthralled as you show them the secret compartments and show this off. Not only is it beautiful you have a desk as well as bookcase and storage above.
