About the Item

Surmounted by a Spanish brocatelle marble top, the frieze is centered by a foliate-ornamented urn flanked by two flaming lamps in front and stylized rosettes on either side. Bordered by herms with anthropomorphic capitals and feet, the facade bears an elaborate escutcheon of opposing bird form figures and acanthus scrolls. The fall front door opens to reveal a satinwood interior surmounted by an Etruscan style frieze bearing a herm fountain, torchères, a Cupid figure, and a central elevated statue within a columned niche. Three pigeonholes and eight drawers, four with individual locks, are situated between two ormolu and palmette ornamented pilasters at either end. Designed with two winged female caryatid figures with gold-painted palmettes, acanthus and floral ornamentation, the anterior legs rest upon an ormolu-banded plinth which supports a large mirror plate at back. Charles-Joseph Lemarchand (1759-1826) was born in Dieppe and from 1785 resided on the rue du Faubourg-Saint Honoré in Paris. His sister married the celebrated ébéniste Pierre Roussel and it is believed that Lemarchand apprenticed in his workshop. Before the Revolution, he supplied the Garde-Meuble Royal with many pieces, in particular twenty commodes for the Chateau of Saint Cloud. Although repeatedly censured by the Napoleonic regime, he continued to produce superb pieces throughout the Empire period, but only recovered his distinguished career under the Restauration government. He again worked for the Garde-Meuble and produced furniture for Versailles, Saint Cloud and the rooms of the Duchesse de Berry and Madame de Bain de Montagnac at the Tuileries. Lemarchand died at the age of sixty-six on January 15, 1826 having produced some of his finest work in the last several years of his life.
