19th Century German Biedermeier Secretary with Columns, circa 1815

About the Item

Writing cabinet with portico structure. South Germany Pear tree Biedermeier around 1815 Dimensions: H x W x D: 174 x 95 x 49 cm Description: Strictly cubist piece of furniture standing on pointed legs and veneered in pear. The furniture front is divided into three drawers below, the writing flap above and another wide drawer above the flap. The upper end is formed by a single-door structure in the form of a portico and a small drawer to the left and right of it. The portico has four columns on the front and four more on the outside. The two outer porticoes are visually extended by mirrors mounted on the back - a great effect that can only be seen from a slightly oblique viewing position. The Schinkel-roof reinforces the strictly architectural overall impression of the piece of furniture. The grain pattern of the pear veneer is neatly laid continuously across the entire furniture front. Beautiful contrasts are formed by the ebony key plates in the shape of coats of arms. In combination with the ebonized elements in the upper furniture area, the result is a fantastic harmony. Harmonious continues also in the interior. It consists of two rows of drawers, two open compartments as well as the central column hall, which is also mirrored on the back. This absolutely extraordinary design element can be pulled out to the front. By releasing a catch, it gives access to three hidden drawers. For me, this secretary is one of the most outstanding examples of the high art of German furniture making at the beginning of the 19th century. It is pure and early Biedermeier in perfect perfection! The veneer of the furniture front with its very strict symmetrical grain, the great craftsmanship and the strict architecture in the furniture are absolutely unique. Condition: Restored and polished with shellac. The drawers run perfectly, the locks work.

North Germany / Prussia Birch Biedermeier / Empire around 1815 Dimensions: H x W x D: 174 x 102 x 55 cm Description: Very exclusive secretary from the Prussian North German Biedermeier period around 1815. Piece of furniture standing on pointed legs with two drawers at the bottom, the writing flap above, another drawer above and a hidden head drawer at the very top. The piece of furniture is veneered in exciting grained birch wood. Due to the different color hangings within the wood and the interplay of hues associated with it, we also refer to it as "flamed" birch. The beautiful wood is complemented by blackened moldings and beautiful fire-gilded bronze hardware in beautiful quality. The interior of the writing compartment is veneered in apple tree. We see a stair-like rise to a central door flanked by pilasters. Drawers of different sizes and two large compartments with dividers for letters and papers complete the secretary part. Looking at the piece of furniture from above, we see an old shipping label. According to it, the secretary was loaded onto the train at the station "Odertor" in Wroclaw. The destination was probably Berin. Corresponding mmarkings we find on the back panel. Piece of furniture made in wonderful quality craftsmanship. A true testament to the high quality of Prussian furniture...
