About
Narrow Biedermeier Secretary
Central/Eastern Germany
Probably Padouk
19th century, Biedermeier, circa 1825
Dimensions: H x W x D: 152 x 96 x 47 cm
Description:
Very nice classic Biedermeier stand secretaire in a rarely narrow design. The 96 cm in width apply at the top of the cornice at the widest point. The corpus is approx. 87 cm wide.
Antique Secretaire standing on massive block feet with two large drawers at the bottom, the writing flap and another drawer above.
Continuous veneer pattern of a wood species I am not quite sure about. Probably it is Padouk.
The interior consists of a total of six drawers of different sizes as well as two open compartments and a door.
As the upper end of the furniture we see a round gallery, which is typically found on furniture from Saxony and neighbouring areas.
Condition:
Restored condition ready for daily use, refurbished signs of age. Shellac hand polish. Free from worm infestation.
Comparable objects can be found in the literature: Renate Möller - Empire- und Biedermeier Möbel p. 40 ff
Good to know about Biedermeier era:
The Biedermeier era developed almost at the same time as the Empire and so we find numerous parallels in the design language. Both epochs were characterized by a strictly classicistic and straightforward basic form. Precious woods such as cherry or mahogany, which was very expensive at the time, were popular in both epochs. Walnut, ash, birch and all kinds of fruit woods were also popular.
In Biedermeier furniture construction, attention is paid to straight lines and a strictly cubist design. Decorative elements are largely dispensed with, even the geometric fields of the previous Louis XVI era give way in favor of flatness. Carefully selected and mirrored veneers now ensure the design of the surface. Sparsely attached pillars and recessed key plates made of ebony loosen up the flatness.
The formal language of the Biedermeier period spread throughout Central Europe from circa 1800. We find Biedermeier furniture in regionally different variations in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Hungary, as well as in the Scandinavian region.
