About the Item

A fine Napoléon III gilt-bronze mounted sycamore, amaranth and mahogany secrétaire à Abattant with Sèvres-style Porcelain plaque, by Leclaire, Paris. Paris, circa 1860. Stamped twice to the carcass 'A. LECLAIRE/PARIS'. Stamped to the reverse of the carcass 'M. CARLIN, JMV' with two oval branded seals with three fleurs de lys above a crown. This exceptional Secrétaire à Abattant is based upon an important eighteenth century model in the Wallace Collection, London (Wallace Collection No. F305). The cabinet is of Louis XVI style with a brocatelle violette d'Espagne marble top above a finely cast gilt-bronze lambrequin and drapery border and a frieze drawer. Below is a fall front inlaid with marquetry fleur de lys trellis and centred by a fine Sèvres-Style porcelain plaque depicting a farmyard scene framed by green borders with gilt tooled Vitruvian scrolls. The fall front opens to a gilt-tooled leather writing surface embossed with the royal Bourbon seal. The cabinet has a fitted interior with an exceptional stained fruitwood capriccio depicting a figure in architectural ruins in the manner of Panini or Piranesi and flanked by an arrangement of drawers, including a long pen drawer, with integral gilt-bronze and brass inkwell and sand shaker. The cabinet is raised on a stand fitted with a frieze drawer on fluted and reeded legs united by a galleried undertier. Aîné Jean-Eugène Leclaire: Aîné Jean-Eugène Leclaire was the eldest of the Leclaire brothers of cabinet makers. He owned a furniture and upholstery shop located in Paris at 33 rue Saint Nicolas Saint-Antoine in 1853 and at number 20 in 1856. Amongst other furniture, he is recorded as making buffets, dining tables, secrétaires, cylinder desks and pianos. Leclaire is also likely to have retailed furniture made by some of the other leading ébénistes of the day. Literature: Hughes, Peter.
