About the Item

Rare and iconic “Artona” centerpiece shelf by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto, 1975 A masterpiece of 1970s Italian design, this exceptional “Artona” centerpiece cabinet was designed by the celebrated couple Afra and Tobia Scarpa and produced by Maxalto in 1975. A rare and completely original example of the iconic Artona series, this piece is not only a highly collectible mid-century piece of furniture, but also a testament to the refined balance of function, aesthetics and craftsmanship that defined Scarpa's design philosophy. Made with a solid walnut plywood frame and selected fine veneers, the cabinet expresses the timeless elegance of natural materials, enhanced by Scarpa's signature approach to form and proportion. The sleek, vertical profile is enhanced by softly beveled edges, where multiple wood tones interact to create subtle tactile contrasts. This attention to materials and textures is one of the hallmarks of the Artona line, which stands out for its architectural quality and rich, organic finishes, a signature of Maxalto's highest manufacturing standards. Designed as a freestanding piece, this piece of furniture is ideal for placement in the center of a room. Used as a bookcase, an object display or a room divider, its multifunctional structure is perfectly suited to a wide range of interiors, from vintage-modern living rooms to refined design studios or private libraries. The interior shelving system features open compartments of various sizes, offering versatile storage and display options. Every shelf and joint reflects the meticulous construction and technical precision for which the Scarpas are world-renowned. Another detail is its feet with casters for easy movement This functional detail further elevates the cabinet’s versatility, making it suitable for both permanent placement and flexible spatial arrangements.
