About the Item
A stunning Genoese carved walnut coin cabinet with twenty-one drawers created to hold secrets from 17th century. This Italian Louis XIV coin cabinet features an extraordinary architectural form, the front shows sixteen drawers, two vertical rows of four drawers each, centered by an aedicule with a carved naked male figure standing out in the niche of the central body, between two Doric columns. The base of the aedicule hides a faux drawer and the pediment with a broken tympanum conceals another drawer,The side edges are decorated with armigers, warriors and carved figures. The coin cabinet rests on a jutting frame and two bracket feet while the upper part has a frame with a carved tooth decoration. The central door reveals six drawers in two vertical rows, hiding many secrets. The coin cabinet is full of secrets: one is hidden behind the drawer of the central base; in the castle of the six drawers located behind the door we find another compartment behind the row of the two lower drawers. Extracting the castle we find, at the rear right corner, a compartment with three drawers hidden by the vertical sliding of a poplar slat.It features twenty-one drawers, ten on the front, six inside the central tabernacle door and additional five drawers divided into three secrets.
Good age related condition. Genoa, 1600. Beautiful warm dark patina and stunning original locks and handles from the 1600s. Note how similar is the devilish effigy carved in the center of the pediment and the plates of the drawer handles.
Ready to be placed in your interiors.
