Brazilian Modern Floating Sideboard in Hardwood, Carlo Hauner, 1950s

About the Item

This elegantly floating sideboard (or bar), crafted from Rosewood and designed by Carlo Hauner for Forma in the 1960s, showcases a sleek rectangular silhouette. It features two doors and four interior storage compartments with adjustable glass shelves, offering versatile storage options. The original brass keys, characteristic of Hauner’s early wood designs, are included and remain in excellent condition. The hardware is also well-preserved. The wood has been expertly restored, highlighting its vibrant grain and natural veins. Additionally, the manufacturer’s seal is located on the back of the piece. About the designer: Carlo Hauner's (1927-1997) partnership with Martin Eisler (1913-1977) embodied a new era of Brazilian Modernist design, establishing the iconic Brazilian Furniture company Forma as co-founders and head designers. Born in Brescia, Italy, Hauner began his career as a painter in Milan before eventually emigrating and establishing himself in Brazil. He founded Móveis Artesanal in São Paulo, later evolving into the renowned Forma in 1953 after partnering with Martin Eisler. Hauner and Eisler differentiated themselves by pioneering new production methods while simultaneously incorporating Brazilian motifs and cultural influences. Their skilled craftsmanship, coupled with the use of local materials such as hardwood, leather, and iron, resulted in elegant and versatile pieces that attracted a wider audience. Hauner and Eisler revolutionized furniture design, now internationally recognized as one of the leading mid-century Modern Brazilian design companies.

Brazilian Modern Armchairs in Fabric, Hardwood & Metal, Carlo Hauner, 1950s
By Carlo Hauner
Located in New York, NY
Available now, this Mid-Century Modern armchair set in velvet, Hardwood & Steel designed by Carlo Hauner in the fifties is perfect! This gorgeous set features a steel structure painted in black and a seat & body backrest in new gray velvet upholstery with three buttons and delicate Brazilian Rosewood (known as Jacaranda) arms. The restoration of the set took a few months because when I bought it the armchairs didn't have the Jacaranda arms, and every collector knows that the value of a piece is on the integrity of the piece, meaning original pieces and method. Finding Hauner’s wood arms took me to many antique markets until two months after I found the wood arms in a shop specialized in vintage furniture in Rio de Janeiro’s city center. Now the piece is complete! These armchairs are so awesome that we’ve paired them in the gallery with other pieces and are always spectacular. The first furniture set showcases the armchairs with Scapinelli’s famous Acqua coffee table and Jorge Zalszupin Pullman sofa. The second image has the set next to Celina Decoracoes four seat sofa and a delicate Scapinelli coffee table. The third image has one armchair next to Sergio Rodrigues’s Sabara Rosewood trunk...
