Rare and important buffet designed by Mario Minale (Italian or German b.1973) and Kuniko Maeda (Japan, b. 1976) composed of over 30,000 Lego bricks and produced for Droog Design, the Netherlands in 2010. This work, both humorous and serious as a modern design statement, is a homage to the ground-breaking early modern exploration of the Dutch furniture designer and architect, Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964).

Rietveld created only one of these buffets circa 1918 which is now in the Centraal Museum in Amsterdam. The Minale-Maeda piece is made entirely in Lego after the original piece. By agreement with the Rietweld estate it is now the only piece that can be made. Thus, it is unique.

It is composed of four opening drawers and two opening doors with an interior shelf for storage. More important are the design principles. Rietveld was a founding member of De Stijl and the piece exemplifies to the highest degree De Stijl principles of simplicity and abstraction by using straight horizontal and vertical lines and rectangular forms. It is a masterpiece of intersecting planes, angles and oppositional forms in an attempt to find aesthetic balance and an ideal geometric harmony. The color palette is reduced to a simple wood tone with white details in an effort to attain spiritual sobriety amidst the complexity of angles.

The De Stijl movement was influenced by Cubist painting as well as by the mysticism and the ideas about "ideal" geometric forms in the Neo-platonic philosophy of mathematician M. H. J. Schoenmaekers.
