Antique French Oak Buffet De Chasse with Rouge Du Languedoc Marble Top, C. 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
A buffet de chasse is a highly functional piece of furniture that was often used at 17th and 18th century French hunting lodges to present game before a feast. Our French oak buffet de chasse was hand-carved circa 1900 and features a beautiful rouge du Languedoc marble top with cream and gray veining. Freshly felled game would have been displayed on the one and a quarter inch thick top with recessed quarter round molding. The marble is supported by a wood body that has been recently bleached, leaving the oak in a pleasing and versatile color. A pair of asymmetrically shaped doors with arched tops and quarter round molding opens on iron hinges to reveal a full-length shelf capable of holding linens and serving pieces. The doors are “double evolution”, meaning the rectangular panels beside the doors are also hinged, allowing full access to the interior. Above each second evolution (bordering an unadorned spandrel) is a small drawer that would have been used to store cutlery. The sides have been carved with recessed rectangular panels and the base has a thick molding, providing the buffet with a low profile. Our antique French oak buffet...

Bleached Antique French Oak Buffet de Chasse with Marble Top, C. 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
During the 17th and 18th centuries, a specialized buffet, known as a buffet de chasse, became popular in French hunting lodges and chateaus. Traditionally waist high, these buffets were often topped with a beautiful piece of marble above a pair of shaped doors. They almost always had a double hinge system on the doors to allow full access to a single shelf interior, used for faience platters and linens. A buffet de chasse, such as our bleached oak cabinet, would have been used to display hunted game before a big feast. Hand-carved in France, circa 1900, the one inch thick marble is dark gray with red, cream, brown, and light gray inclusions, which pairs well with the warm, beige color of the oak wood base. Beneath the recessed quarter round molding of the marble are a pair of asymmetrical doors...
