Phillip Lloyd Powell Wall-Mounted Sideboard in Walnut

About the Item

Phillip Lloyd Powell, wall-mounted cabinet, walnut, Unites States, 1970s With regard to its essential form, material use, and woodwork, this wall-mounted sideboard is a testimony to Phillip Lloyd Powell's expert craftsmanship and distinctive methodology. The unit revolves around a linear and strict layout with sharp lines and angular shapes dominating the scenery. This is contrasted by the organically, carved pattern on one slat achieved through the technique of chip carving. Additionally, the walnut breaks the strict lines due to its pronounced grains and variation in wood tones. The cabinet consists of eight drawers, with some containing separators. A subtle but defining detail of this cabinet is the small, carved areas that facilitate easy access to the drawer above. Besides their functional property, the exposed dovetail joints have a strong decorative character. Powell succeeded in creating a durable piece of furniture with a timeless aesthetic and impeccable quality. Phillip Lloyd Powell (1919-2008) is one of the essential members of the American Studio Craft Movement. Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1919, he discovered his love for furniture design at a young age. He already began crafting his own furniture and custom furniture for family and friends in his adolescent years. He studied engineering at Drexel university but was drafted to serve in the Army Air Corps during the Second World War. After his return from the army, he settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, a place that was crowded with craftspeople such as Paul Evans. It was during this period that he met Evans and throughout the 1950s and 1960s the two men shared a studio. Therefore, they often collaborated, creating some of the most important furniture of the Midcentury Studio Furniture Movement. Together, they shared a love for materials and a passion for handcrafted pieces. Therefore, all his pieces are handmade from high quality, grained woods that often recall their natural shape and form. Another natural material that he often used was slate, the deep grey material was often used for table or credenza tops. He was a man who only want to produce exquisite pieces. In comparison to his contemporary, George Nakashima, he only had a very small production, as he produced about 10.000 pieces. It was in fact Nakashima who urged Powell to begin designing for himself in the first place. Today, Powell’s well-known carved wooden cabinets, consoles, chairs and dining tables are one of the most sought-after pieces from that era.

  • Phillip Lloyd Powell Coffee Table in Walnut
    By Phillip Lloyd Powell
    Located in Waalwijk, NL
Phillip Lloyd Powell, coffee table, walnut, United States, 1960s Stunning coffee table with free edges by US designer Phillip Lloyd Powell. On four circular tapered legs Powell places a long tabletop that follows the characteristics of the natural material. Free edges allow a free form and an uneven top that shows the marks of the wood. Also visible in the top are the round ends of the legs and a dovetail joint. Overall, Powell used an expressive piece of wood, and in turn, he implemented its strong appearance in creating this unique coffee table. Wood joints to connect the legs and a butterfly joint on top create a stunning composition of the natural impact of the wood and the artist’s hand. Measurements: 24.5 ” tall x 24? wide x 30? deep x seat height 18? (arm height 21") (seat to the lowest point 11") Jens Risom Danish-American architect-designer Jens Risom was born in Copenhagen in 1916, the son of a nationally renowned architect of the Nordic Classicism style. Between 1935 and 1938, he trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Ole Wanscher and Kaare Klint, alongside classmates Hans Wegner and Børge Mogensen. For a short time following his studies, he took on furniture and interior designer projects for the Copenhagen-based architectural firm Ernst Kuhn. He then moved briefly to Stockholm, where he worked for Nordiska Kompaniet and met Alvar Aalto and Bruno Mathsson. Around 1939, he immigrated to New York with ambitions to introduce the Scandinavian modernist approach to the US furniture market. Risom’s arrival in the US coincided with the years of materials shortages brought on by the war. As a result, Risom was unable to secure a position in a furniture company, and, instead, found work designing textiles for decorator Dan Cooper. Eager to do more, he soon convinced Cooper to expand into the furniture market, and together they found projects with young, progressive architects like Ed Stone and George Nelson. In 1939-40, Ed Stone was invited to create Collier Magazine’s House of Ideas pavilion at Rockefeller Center as part of the New York World’s Fair, and Risom designed all of the furniture. Around 1941, Risom met Hans Knoll, a German-born entrepreneur in the furniture industry who had a showroom on Madison Avenue dedicated to rather lackluster furnishings. Sharing a dream to do something more vanguard, they joined forces and set off on a four-month tour of the US in search of design inspiration. By 1942, Knoll launched Hans Knoll Furniture Company with Risom on board as his head designer. Risom’s early designs for Knoll made use of military surplus...
