Very Rare Mid-Century Modern Sideboard / Credenza by 't Woonhuys of Amsterdam

About the Item

Rare Mid-Century Modern, oak and cherry wood, six doors and three drawers cabinet. This rare credenza / sideboard by one of Holland's finest furniture makers of the early 1900s could very well be one of the first Midcentury Modern pieces that was hand-crafted here in the Netherlands. 't Woonhuys in Amsterdam was one of the best furniture makers and in the earliest years of its existance it even employed absolute top designers such as Michel de Klerk and Hildo Krop. Later also various known architects designed pieces for this, ahead of its time, furniture maker. Little is known about how and when exactly the company seized to exist, but certainly no material can be found on them after 1960. The second world war had left almost everyone out of money and there simply was no clientele left in Holland who could afford the quality pieces that 't Woonhuys was putting out. World war II basically ended almost all the Dutch, top quality furniture makers and it is a minor miracle that 't Woonhuys even lasted until 1960. This extremely rare and stylish midcentury cabinet is the first one that we have ever seen by this famous Dutch furniture maker. The combination of the stained oak exterior, the sleek and timeless lines in the design and the cherry-wood interior makes this 'tall credenza' stand out from anything we ever saw. Just like you, we too are used to seeing cabinets from this era in much lighter colors (most were made of beech and types of teakwood) and that too is what immediately made us want to buy this rare and striking piece. All six doors still open and close perfectly and they all come with perfect working, quality brass locks and replacement keys. The three, perfect condition drawers in the middle stylishly divide this cabinet into two tiers. They slide open (and close) perfectly as well and the inside of the one drawer on the right has a velvet lining, because that drawer was used to keep silver cutlery. Apart from some minor wear this possibly one of a kind midcentury sideboard is in very good condition and absolutely ready for you to use and enjoy. It is not often that one gets the chance to purchase a midcentury design cabinet by a Dutch top maker that is unique on 1stdibs, but also extremely rare on the planet. The stained oak surface makes it look even more cool and it also makes the cherry interior come out even better. This handcrafted and marked (see images 15 and 16) Midcentury Modern cabinet can be used as a tall credenza, as a sideboard, as a dry bar, as a cabinet for vinyl records, as an office cabinet for files, as a bookcase etc. Its marvelous design and presence will immediately change the look and feel of the room it is in and it will lift your spirit every time you look at it. This rare and early piece of Dutch Mid Century Modern design by 't Woonhuys is great value for money. Especially when taking into account that perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 workdays are complimentary. Maximum width x height x depth: 63 x 51 x 17.7 inches. Maximum width x depth of the inside of each of the six cabinets: 20 x 15.3 inches. All six shelves that divide the cabinets into two halves are removable. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again). You can shop all our 1000+ listings by pushing the button that reads 'View All From Seller'.

  • Antique Hand Carved Oak & Wrought Iron Gothic Church Cabinet / Two Tier Credenza
    Located in Lisse, NL
Marvelous and practical Gothic Revival cabinet from the early 1800s. This rare, Dutch workmanship, Gothic Revival cabinet from the early 19th century for several reasons is another one of our recent great finds. First of all, this ecclesiastical antique is made exactly like it would have been in early Medieval times. Only solid oak was used and to make this cabinet strong and stable for centuries to come, the artisan(s) only used the ancient method of wooden pin-hole connections (as shown in many of our images). Besides that you should also be able to see how hand-forged, wrought iron nails (with a big head) were used to tighten certain connections whilst at the same time decorating the sides and the top of this cabinet. The perfectly hand carved panels in the shape of Gothic cathedral windows and folded bible pages...
