Weiss & Basser Curved Wall with Floating Sideboard

$14,000

About

Hans Weiss (1900 to ?) and William Basser (1900 to 1958) of Weiss & Basser interior designers, New York, NY curved walnut wall unit mounted with floating sideboard consisting of three cabinets apparently supported by brass standoffs between an upper and lower shelf curved flush to the wall. The wall itself is fitted with a tile mural by artist Jean Nison consisting of twelve tiles (one repaired) as well as a perforated brass and enameled metal wall lamp by BAG Turgi. Overall dimensions: 99 inches high by 101 inches wide by 28 inches deep. Each of the three cabinets is 14 inches high 22 inches wide by 15 inches deep. The beautiful book matched doors open on a spring clip. This work was custom made for the 90 Riverside Drive apartment of Jacques and Alina Roisen, circa 1959 together with an architectural sideboard-buffet which we have listed separately. (ref: LU886622968512). The curved wall disassembles into three vertical panels plus the five piece sideboard. For more on the ceramic tiles and murals of Jean Nison see Michael Padwee's impeccably researched blog Tiles In New York Hans Weiss and William Basser were both Viennese Jewish émigrées to New York in the late 1830's. Their work, both residential and commercial is extensively documented in the Gottscho-Schleisner photographic archives in the Library of Congress under both Hans Weiss and Weiss & Basser. Although the photo archives cite only Hans Weiss as the designer on the Roisen project, further research suggests that related design concepts and motifs had been utilized on projects completed by the partnership of Weiss & Basser prior to 1958 when William Basser died. Therefore design credit should be shared with William Basser. In speaking with the grandson of William Basser we have learned that the carpentry and cabinet makers may have been relatives and fellow Austrian refugees, Hans Herschan and Eric Nasch. We have compiled substantial biographical information on both Weiss and Basser which is available by request.
