C. Paderni; N. Billy, Centeur, Youth with Lyre, Herculaneum
Located in Norwich, GB
Mythology: Centeur, Youth with Lyre - Fresco from the discoveries at Herculaneum. Overall 49 x 37 cm copper engraving in later hand colour. Issued from the work "Delle Antichità di Ercolano - Le Pitture Antiche D´Ercolano e contorini..." detailing the latest discoveries from Herculaneum. References: Borroni II, 5422. Cicognara 2645. Ornamentstichslg. Berlin 3947. Graesse I, 145: "Ouvrage magnifique...” Very good overall condition. Light marginal spotting. The excavations at Heculaneum began in 1711, when a well was being dug for the new country house of Emmanuel Maurice, Duke of Elbeuf at Portici. The well turned out to have been sunk into the buried and richly ornamented proscenium of the theater of Herculaneum, and yielded several valuable marbles, including a statue of Hercules. The duke was extremely short of money. He smuggled the pieces to Rome to be restored, and then "gave" them to Prince Eugene of Savoy, his cousin. In 1738 Charles VII of Naples - after 1759, Charles III of Spain - began excavations to find objects for his private collection of antiquities, imposing tight security on the site. Interest was maintained by the hope of finding more objects of similar value to the first set of statues...

The bold pattern features striking polychrome enamels of rocks and different flowers all in the Chinoiserie style, hand painted over-glaze in different colours over an under-glaze blue printed outline. The pattern is embellished with good hand gilding. There is also a deep border pattern to the inside rim which replicates the outer mug pattern with sprigs of hand painted flowers. The mark on the base of the mug is Godden's 1183, a blue printed DAVENPORT STONE CHINA...

19C Aquatint Engraving of the Quay at Waterford
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a lovely 19C Aquatint Engraving of the Quay at Waterford in Waterford city in Ireland. This engraving has been hand embellished with aquatint color(s) and is from Ireland circa 1820-40. It features a scene of the Quay or Port of Waterford from circa 1820. We are basing this upon the attire of the figures in the engraving and the tall ships. It features Reginald’s Tower (still located at the Waterford Quay to this day). Georgian Quay buildings, a number of moored tall ships and row boats, barrels, horses and carts, women and British soldiers. The engraving was professionally reframed and matted in Dallas in the 1980’s and the rear of the frame says that it was “Museum Mounted and Matted”. The frame has a lovely Grecian pattern around the front. If you are Irish...
