19th Century Mahogany Marquetry Card or Occasional Table

About the Item

Marquetry and burl, expertly crafted into a 19th century Louis XVI style occasional or entry table creates a splash. The table was made in France in the late 19th century and it is beautiful with the tone and various colors of the inset marquetry work. True to the style of "the last king," the mahogany table features a geometric shape that emerged during the period. It has cabriolet legs, which are more typical of Louis XV, but the appraiser says this is otherwise Louis XVI style. It almost resembles a game table, a style that grew in popularity during the period. The table is of square section with outset corners and serpentine sides. The marquetry and parquetry veneered top is profusely inlaid with lightwood foliate inlay, the serpentine side rails pierced and with robust foliate and C-scroll carving, with tall carved cabriole legs joined by a circular burl wood shelf-stretcher. The table top features beautiful motifs and shapes. The beauty is in the details of the carved friezes and leaf formations. This table could use a bit of spiffing up and attention to the top and finish. That is the only reason it is categorized as fair rather than good condition. A rare and wonderful table.

The beautiful details make this 19th century occasional table a standout. The design is 360 degrees with stylized touches from every angle, allowing for more design options. The pine finish has developed a warm patina, and the turned legs are flush with detail. The table is either American or English, late 19th Century. The rectangular top with molded edge over a corresponding frame fitted with a single molded long drawer, is raised on ring-turned legs, joined by a shelf stretcher. One of the planks in the stretcher is loose and will be tightened. This is a surprisingly sturdy and solid piece with nice design features. • 19th Century Corner Chair American or English
    Located in Lomita, CA
The cherub upholstery fabric of this antique corner chair will bring a smile to your face, but the piece deserves a deeper look. It has a secret.: The chair has a "second skin," in a tweed upholstery that someone was reluctant to remove. The cherub upholstery on the armrest of the chair is actually a shawl or drape for the for the chair. It is Victorian, carved and turned walnut on a part-upholstered corner armchair that is English or American from the late 19th Century according to our appraiser. The seat is triangular with a rounded front rail, that is backed by two low arms with raised upholstery. The curved seat rail has a long fringe trim, all raised on four cylindrical bead turned legs on casters. The detachable fabric drape or shawl is priceless. Appraisers beleive this could have possibly been half of a two-piece tete-a-tete chair...
