About the Item
Origin: Italy, circa 1850–1890
Materials: Elm burl and oak top with intricate marquetry in exotic woods (including rosewood and kingwood); turned baluster column; carved tripod base
Dimensions: Height 79 cm (31.1 in); Diameter 85 cm (33.5 in)
This exquisite Italian center table, dating from the 19th century, features a circular top crafted from elm burl and oak, richly adorned with geometric marquetry motifs in a variety of fine and exotic woods. The intricate radial pattern, executed with remarkable precision, creates a starburst effect that highlights the exceptional craftsmanship of Italian cabinetmakers from the period — reminiscent of Sorrento or Neoclassical inlay work.
The tabletop rests on a turned baluster-form column, descending into a finely carved tripod base with subtle scroll feet. The carved details are executed in rosewood and kingwood, enhancing the overall contrast and refinement of the piece. The table retains its original shellac finish, which enhances the natural luster and depth of the selected woods.
Condition
In excellent condition, this table is structurally sound and has been gently polished to preserve its original patina. Minor wear consistent with age and use.
Provenance and Style
This type of pedestal table, often referred to as a guéridon, was popular in mid to late 19th-century Italy, prized for its elegant form and sophisticated marquetry. Comparable examples can be found in prestigious collections and galleries, and are highly sought after by collectors of European decorative arts.
