Solid Silver Art Nouveau Tea Table by Schleissner & Sohne

About the Item

Made of solid silver, raised on four legs topped with ram's head and centred with a carved relief plaque depicting cherubs, the oval shaped tiers surfaced with mirrored glass, the top tier in detachable tray form with beaded rim and twin handles, the lower tier raised on four continuing legs modelled at the top as acanthus leaves leading to hoof feet, marked in several places with German silver crescent moon and crown, incised with '800' for standard silver and sickle for Schleissner. This exceptional table is crafted entirely from solid silver. The rare work is unusual for its exquisite attention to detail and fusion of styles. Provenance: The final image shows a rare original photograph of the silver tea table from the company archive of J. D. Schleissner & Sohne. The photograph is inscribed 'No. 10469' with additional numbers below this. Examination of J.D. Schleissner & Sohne's original photographs, design drawings and company moulds revealed that the work was made in 1910 for a family in the banking business in Aachen, Germany. Schleissner & Sohne: J.D. Schleissner & Sohne were Hanau's preeminent producer of antique style silverware in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The company was founded in 1817 by Johann Christian Daniel Schleissner (1793-1862), who originated from a family of Augsburg goldsmiths. His son, Daniel Philipp August Schleissner (1825-1892), continued the business after his father’s death. Under Daniel Philipp’s leadership, the company began to specialise in creating exquisite silver objects in a historical style, exhibiting at many international exhibitions throughout the late 1800s and into the 20th century where their works were met with critical acclaim. After Daniel Philipp’s death, J.D. Schleissner & Sohne maintained their reputation for producing exceptional silverware and continued to furnish the homes of the nobility across Europe into the 20th century.
